Overview

This volume, which covers gardens and their aesthetic and technical components, methodically lists all the terms – approximately three thousand words from everyday, scientific, professional and literary language – used to analyse and describe all the elements that make up a garden.

The first part identifies the various components: topography, covered and open areas, pathways, ornamental water features, structures, ornaments and garden furniture, and landscaping. The second part presents techniques specific to the garden, including a description of the site’s topography and layout. It then moves on to the soil, defining the main soil types, fertilisation methods and tools. Plant biology is followed by sowing and planting methods, plant propagation, watering and irrigation, drainage and specialised equipment, plant protection and management, forestry techniques and, finally, plant habit and form.
