Overview

In 2004, the Ministry of Culture established the ‘Remarkable Garden’ label. It recognises gardens and parks, whether public or private, that are of cultural, aesthetic, historical or botanical interest. Six criteria govern the awarding of the label: composition; integration into the site and the quality of the surrounding area; the presence of remarkable features; botanical interest; historical interest in the case of historic gardens; and the quality of maintenance. Today, 450 parks and gardens hold this label in France. This guide is the first publication to bring together those that have been awarded the label in the Île-de-France region by the DRAC. It invites readers to enjoy lovely walks through the region’s 40 gardens, including the most famous ones such as the National Estate of Versailles (Yvelines) and the Palais-Royal gardens in Paris, but also lesser-known ones such as the Vallée-aux-Loups in Châtenay-Malabry (Hauts-de-Seine), the Bourdelle Garden Museum in Égreville (Seine-et-Marne), the Val-de-Marne Rose Garden in L’Haye-les-Roses, the ‘murs à pêche’ in Montreuil (Seine-Saint-Denis), the Île-Verte garden in Châtenay-Malabry (Hauts-de-Seine), the Jardin de l’Outil in Wy-dit-Joli-Village (Val-d’Oise) and the Domaine de Segrez (Essonne).
