Presentation

Whilst the relics for which the Sainte-Chapelle was built have left this Great Reliquary, the modern visitor is still left to marvel at the splendour of its glass architecture – that is to say, its stained-glass windows. This is what Paul Claudel was referring to when he wrote in *L’Œil écoute*: “What was merely pigment on earth is glorified in heaven through transparency. These panes of coloured glass around us are matter that feels; they are abstract matter, sensitive to the intellectual ray… Here is paradise regained.”

In this album, visitors, as well as stained-glass enthusiasts and readers of the Bible, will find descriptions of each of the some 1,200 scenes that make up the curtain of light in the upper chapel, the restoration of which has just been completed. Both an act of faith and a political act, the Sainte-Chapelle is revealed here in a new light.
