A church under threat
The Chapel of Saint Peter or the Hermitage, a small troglodyte church from the 11th century (1030-1060), is the oldest part of the Abbey of Montmajour.
Although small in size, it is a real church, with two parallel aisles, the Northern one built into a natural cave. It is extended by further underground rooms which seem to have had multiple uses (cemetery, hermit's dwellings, sacristy, etc.).

The rock, which previously protected the small community of monks who lived there, has been threatening to collapse for several years, meaning the Hermitage has been closed to the public.
Consolidation of the building has been carried out, but there are still a number of works that need to be completed: filling in the cracks, restoring the painted decorations, repointing the tiles and re-cladding the capitals.
