BUDDING ARCHAEOLOGISTS AT ENSÉRUNE

Help us finance a new educational excavation pit to enable pupils to make their own discoveries!

Between the 6th century BC and the 1st century AD, the Oppidum of Ensérune, between Agde and Béziers, was a major Gallic settlement in the south of France. The archaeological site welcomes 30,000 visitors every year, 4,000 of whom are school children.

In addition to the tour of the museum showing the discoveries made during excavations undertaken since 1915, much emphasis is given to the practical side: enabling students to carry out their own excavations, to become familiar with the tools (trowels, brushes, shovels), to learn how archaeologists handle things, and to feel the indescribable emotion of discovering genuine objects that have been previously buried.

HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE TO IMPROVE LEARNING

Current work in progress on the Ensérune site has obliged us to move the existing excavation pit. Our aim: to take advantage of the opportunity to redesign an improved installation.

Designed to accommodate a whole class, around thirty pupils, this will be a rectangular educational space 8m long and 2m wide, divided into 16 squares, or modules, of 1m (2 pupils per module). Each child excavates a numbered square, and writes down his/her observations on a sheet. The sheets are adapted to the level of each child (primary schools). The pit will be divided into 2 zones: one for excavation, enabling fragments and objects linked to habitation to be uncovered (domestic pots, fragments of an oil lamp, charcoal, etc.); the other, for discovering fragments linked to its past as a burial site (bones, ceramics, fragments of shields, swords, etc.).

As it is outside, it will need a covering structure to protect the children from the effects of weather (wind, rain, exposure to the sun).

YOUR SUPPORT IS NEEDED

The provisional budget for the operation is €15,000 including taxes

Your share for French heritage; help us finance the construction of an educational excavation pit on the archaeological site of Ensérune. In this way, you will contribute to the pupils’ learning, and who knows… inspire archaeological careers.
