Contribute to the restoration of the two sculpted groups "Sphinx et Amours" in the grounds of the Château de Champs-sur-Marne.
Make a donation to the sculptures and be one of the first to see them once they are restored.
Ordered in around 1896-1898 by Louis and Louise Cahen d'Anvers, the two sculpted groups "Sphinx et Amours" are displayed on either side of the lower terrace, facing out onto the gardens. The Sphinx are mounted by Cupids, one holding a garland and the other a crown of flowers.
They are inspired by sculptures originally made by Houzeau, Lerambert and Ambroise Duval for the gardens of Versailles in 1667, symbolising the love of the subjects for their King.
Admiring the beauty of these statues, the Cahen d’Anvers ordered white marble replicas.
The two sculpted groups are particularly badly damaged, presenting multiple cracks and sulphate deposits. The marble has come off in several places and some metal elements in the structure are visible. Restoration work is needed. We are relying on you to help us achieve this.
