The Centre des monuments nationaux conserves, restores, maintains, and animates some one hundred monuments and sites, open to the public. Through their highly diverse periods, styles and original functions, these heritage holdings offer an extensive journey through the history of France and a voyage across its captivating land – from the Font-de-Gaume caves to the Villa Savoye, from Mont-Saint-Michel to the Salses fortress, from the Carnac alignments to the trophy of Augustus at La Turbie, from the Sainte Chapelle to the Château de Bussy-Rabutin and the Château d’Azay-le-Rideau to the Abbey of Cluny, to name but a few. In this imaginative book, each selected monument is discussed from a dual perspective, literary and historic, the former entrusted to some one hundred authors, who were given a free hand, and the latter to their site administrators. If certain combinations seem self-evident – for example Robert Badinter writing on the Conciergerie or Hubert Nyssen on Villeneuve-lès-Avignon –, other encounters are much more unexpected. Yet all authors have produce texts of great interest, with some written as pretexts to conjure up childhood memories. Martin Page offers an emotive promenade amongst the Carnac alignments. The abbey of Thoronet inspires Eliette Abécassis, Le Puy-en-Velay Julia Kristeva, and the Champs-sur-Marne castle Pierre Assouline. Catherine Millet’s text takes on the guise of an invitation to stroll through the fortress of Salses. Mathieu Enart relates the encounter between Georges Clemenceau and Joseph Kessel at Saint-Vincent-sur-Jard. During his visit to Château de Cadillac, Arnaud Maisetti evokes the suffering of women imprisoned there. In "L’œuvre d’une mère terrassée [The work of a shattered mother]", Carole Martinez identifies with the anguish of the benefactor of the Château de Montal. Camille de Toledo draws a parallel between Western and Eastern Europe, between the megaliths of Locqmariaquer and the steles of Treblinka. Certain texts, if deliberately provocative, still provide a moving account of the monument, witness those by Philippe Besson on the Arc de Triomphe, Marie Nimier on Château d’If, and Philippe Lacoche on the towers of Amiens cathedral. Illustrations play a significant role, with an original iconography made up of commissioned images and a selection of photographs from Magnum Photos and from the Centre des Monuments nationaux historic and contemporary archives.
