Petit dictionnaire des Grands Hommes du Panthéon
Jean-François Decraene
Collection "Thématiques"
“A grateful Nation honours its great men.”
This inscription is carved along the base of the pediment of the Pantheon, temple of the Nation, one of the most well known of Paris monuments, erected at the summit of Mont Sainte-Geneviève, and until the end of the 19th century, the highest geographic site in the capital. But who are these great men and women of the Nation who are laid to rest in the crypt under this magnificent cupola? Naturally the most celebrated are familiar to all: Voltaire, Rousseau, Hugo, Zola, and those of the most recent times, Jean Moulin and André Malraux.
This little dictionary records not only these names but the complete list of all the prestigious persons interred in this monument, along with biographical notices and a description of the period of French political life during which they were consecrated or “pantheonized”.
